Jewelry care

The most rational approach to jewelry care is to avoid conditions that can damage the surface of the precious metals or the stones used in it. Jewelry cleaning process should be entrusted into the hands of professionals. Ideally, cleaning of jewelry should be performed periodically by the company that made it- they know the type of materials, additional coatings and technology used in production.

For jewelry to keep its beauty as long as possible, one should follow a few basic rules:

- Jewelry should be stored in a way that limits the access of air, for it is the contact with oxygen that results in the formation dark tarnishes dark (metal oxides) on the surface of silver jewelry. It should be kept in string bags. Please note that the jewelry should be insert dry and free from dirt.

- To protect jewelry against mechanical damage it should be stored separated from the other items and wrapped in soft cloth or tissue.

-  Jewelry must be protected against contact with chemicals, perfume, hairspray (preferably one should put on jewelry after the use of cosmetics, and should try not to put perfume directly on the space, that will be in contact with jewelry). It is also best to protect it, as far as possible, from direct contact with the body.

- Even most favorite piece of jewelry such as rings, which you "never take off", should be removed before all kinds of household tasks.

-  One should avoid excessive heat (sauna, beach), sleeping or bathing in jewelry.

- Jewelry should be cleaned regularly, please remember that a cleaning should properly adjust for the most delicate part of the item.

Currently the market is full of products for jewelry care. It is very important to follow producer's instructions and recommendations about how and for what given product can be used. It is also a good idea to stock up on this kind of items in special stores or from specialized suppliers.

There are many effective, domestic ways of jewelry care. In general, they usually are more delicate and have smaller chance to damage the object, used regularly can provide sufficient results.

Silver Jewelry care:

Chains or jewelry without stones might be soaked in the bath prepared with water and denatured alcohol (a little) for a few minutes. After bath it should be rinsed and dry with a soft cloth (microfiber, flannel - one should not apply any kinf of a domestic special cloths as they are often soaked in chemicals).

The bath can also be prepared with:

- Hot water (preferably deionized) with ammonia or - safer variant - with the addition of lemon juice.

- Baking soda and vinegar (1 tablespoon to 1 liter of water). The bath should not last longer than 15 minutes.

Bath in salt is also very effective.

To prepare it you need:

1) a plastic container or a glass (it should not be made of metal) of a size allowing for dipping the entire item.

2) aluminum foil to cover the bottom and sides of the container.

3) hot water - preferably demineralized, but not necessarily.

4) salt (5 teaspoons of salt in 1 liter of water).

The bottom and sides of the container should be covered with double layer of aluminum foil. Then pour the hot water and add about 5 teaspoons of salt per liter of water, stir until dissolved.

Then item should be cleaned of all possible contamination with water and soap or detergent. After washing the object put it into the prepared bath.

The bath can take from several minutes to several hours - depending on how heavely the object is contaminated. The process can occur quite rapidly. When the process wears off, and you still have to clean more items or you are not satisfied with the result,   prepare another bath - remember to replace aluminum foil as well.

After removing the item from the bath it should be washed with soap and warm water and rinsed, to remove the remaining salt.

One must be very careful while working with oxidised jewelery, as the surface oxide it is very sensitive to mechanical and chemical methods of cleaning.

Another kind of baths, which can be used both for silver and gold jewelry is bath in pure spirit ( or vodka) or Coca-Cola. Items should be left in the bath for about 12 hours.

Gold jewelry Care:

Gold is much less troublesome metal than the silver - on the surface of gold oxides - difficult to remove tarnish - do not form. However this metal also suffers from chemical reactions.

- The easiest way to refresh gold jewelry is a regular bath in warm, soapy water - then rinse it and dry carefully.

- Very effective homemade method requires onion juice. Apply it to the object and leave for a few hours. After several hours, polish it gently with a soft cloth. Then wash and dried.

- Gold jewelry may be dipped in lemon juice or citric acid solution and left for several hours. Then, as in the case of onion juice, after several hours the item should be gently polished with a soft cloth. Then washed and dried.

- Gold items including those with stones (diamonds, emeralds, rubies, sapphires), can be soaked in warm water with soap flakes, then rinsed and dried.

-Gold chains can be rinsed in water with alcohol (95%)

- Gold items can be rineed in denatured alcohol and polished with a soft cloth.
